City of Cumming

Cumming, the county seat of Forsyth County, was established in 1834. The city is said to be named either for Colonel William Cumming of Augusta, a prominent lawyer, or by local Cherokees for Sir Alexander Cumming of England, who settled in America in 1729 and became a Cherokee leader.

There are a number of campgrounds in the city including Bald Ridge Creek Park, Sawnee Park and Shady Grove Park. Also located near Cumming is the historical Mill Covered Bridge, built in 1906, which spans Settendown Creek.

Lake Sidney Lanier

With over 692 miles of shoreline, the lake is well known for its aqua-blue colored water, spectacular scenery and variety of recreational activities.

Constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the 1950's, Lake Lanier is a multi-purpose lake that provides for flood protection, power production, water supply, navigation, recreation and fish and wildlife management.

Lake Lanier is one of 464 lakes in 43 states constructed and operated by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers. It has won the best operated lake of the year award in 1990, 1997 and 2002.

Amicalola Falls State Park

It's easy to see why this is one of Georgia's most popular state parks. Amicalola, a Cherokee Indian word meaning “tumbling waters,” is an appropriate name for these 729-foot falls — the tallest east of the Mississippi River.

An eight-mile approach trail leads from the park to Springer Mountain, the southern end of the 2,135-mile Appalachian Trail.

Atlanta History Center

Founded in 1926 as the Atlanta Historical Society, the Atlanta History Center includes four signature exhibitions and two changing exhibition galleries, four historic houses, the James G. Kenan Research Center, and 33 acres of gardens.

On 3,200 gorgeous acres just 16 miles east of downtown Atlanta, the perfect blend of outdoor entertainment and recreation is realized at Stone Mountain Park. The mountain itself is the world's largest mass of exposed granite.

The centerpiece of the Park -- and one of the true marvels of western engineering -- is found on the mountain's North side, where you'll see the world's largest high relief carving, depicting three heroes of the American Confederacy.
